Best new phones expected in 2019

What new phones are coming in 2019? And what new features can we expect to see?

With plenty of rumors floating about upcoming phones, it's time to take an early look at what 2019 will bring us.

Most smartphone makers have already settled on a yearly upgrade cycle and we already have a good idea of when the most anticipated phones of 2018 will come. We know more about some devices than about others, and with so much time before the actual releases things are surely subject to change, but if you want to get a general idea of what next year will look like in terms of mobile tech, read on.

The big focus of 2019 phones will surely be evicting notches and all that's distracting us from a true, full-screen experience. Some will do it with a whole in the screen, others with clever slider mechanisms and there are bound to be surprises. Performance improvements, camera improvements and more are also on the horizon. With no further ado, let's dive in the specifics with the most anticipated phones coming in 2019.

    First half of the year:

    Samsung Galaxy S10 series
    Samsung Flex
    LG G8 ThinQ
    Sony Xperia XZ4
    Nokia 9
    Huawei P30 and P30 Pro
    OnePlus 7
    BlackBerry Key3

    Second half of the year:

    Samsung Galaxy Note 10
    Xiaomi Pocophone F2
    Moto Z4
    Apple iPhone 2019 series
Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL
    OnePlus 7T
    LG V50 ThinQ
Huawei Mate 30 Pro and Mate 30
    Razer Phone 3
    Xiaomi Mi Mix 4

    First Half of 2019

    Samsung Galaxy S10 series
Expected release: February - April 2019

Samsung will most likely announce three different versions of the Galaxy S10, and all three of them could adopt a brand new, powerful system chip built on the novel 7nm manufacturing process, meaning these phones would be much faster than 2018 flagship Android series.

Rumors are for not one, not two, but three new phones, so let's break them down, one by one:

Affordable Galaxy S10, codename "Beyond 0":

    • 5.8" flat display
    • Side-positioned fingerprint scanner
    • Single camera
    • Single selfie camera

    Galaxy S10, codename "Beyond 1":

    • 6.1" curved Infinity display
    • In-display fingerprint scanner
    • Single selfie camera
    • Dual rear cameras (Regular, telephoto)

    Galaxy S10+, codename "Beyond 2":

    • 6.44" curved Infinity display
    • In-display fingerprint scanner
    • Dual selfie cameras
    • Triple rear camera (Regular, telephoto, wide-angle)

    Samsung Flex
Expected release: First half of 2019

Samsung gave us a first glimpse at its first foldable phone under the Samsung Flex moniker in late 2018 at the Samsung Deveoper Conference, and it truly looks like a revolutionary devices.

The design that Samsung showed includes a phones that is thicker than current smartphones, but has a similar rectangular form with a screen just like a traditional phone. But fold it out and revealed is a brand new, gigantic, tablet-like display.

    LG G8 ThinQ
Expected release: February - April 2019

While we don't yet know much about the LG G8 ThinQ, we do know that it's coming and we do know that it will be LG's best phone in the first half of the year. So far, our best guess about the G8 revolves around an LG patent for a truly bezel-less phone with a cutout in the screen for two front cameras. Such a futuristic design would certainly turn a lot of heads, but of course a filed patent is no guarantee that this technology is indeed coming to the G8.

We do, however, expect the G8 to adopt the triple camera system of the V40 that the company released in late 2018 with a regular camera plus a telephoto one for portraits as well as a third, ultra-wide angle lens. Battery life has been a sore point of LG phones in the past few years, so we really hope the company improves in that aspect as well.

    Sony Xperia XZ4
Expected release: February - June 2019

Sony is on an aggressive schedule: it releases new top tier phones every six months or so, much quicker than the traditional 1-year release schedule of other companies. That's why it's only reasonable to expect the new Sony Xperia XZ4 make its debut at the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona in February. It usually takes Sony a few months to actually launch the phone they show in February, so we would expect the XZ4 to actually arrive on store shelves somewhere in May or June 2019.

What can we expect? The new Snapdragon 855 system chip, Qualcomm's first built on the 7nm manufacturing process that brings a big boost to performance, an improved camera, and hopefully, a gesture navigation that is missing on 2018 Sony phones.

    Nokia 9
Expected release: February - March 2019

The concept image of a phone with a ton of rear cameras might just prove real in the Nokia 9. The long-awaited return of the PureView branding and a true cameraphone Nokia flagship might finally become a reality in 2019.

Nokia seems to have been working on this one for a very long time and the arrival of the new generation of 7nm chips might give the company the power it needs to implement its ambitious camera goals.

    Huawei P30 and P30 Pro
Expected release: March - April 2019

Chinese company Huawei might be under fire in the United States where its phones are banned, but it's growing quickly across the globe. The Huawei P30 and the P30 Pro will be the much anticipated successors to the P20 series, and we expect them to adopt the new face recognition + in-screen fingerprint security system from the current Mate 20 Pro, plus give us further improvements in camera performance.

Of course, we also expect the P30 series to come equipped with the powerful Kirin 980 system chip. Also, expect new variations on Huawei's signature gradient designs that look very stylish and why not even a new Porsche editions P30 Pro.

    OnePlus 7
    Expected release: June 2019

OnePlus has been the favorite company of hardcore Android fans who value performance and speed: the company has a dedicated team of engineers who work solely on shaving milliseconds of lag and ensuring that you get a smooth and fast experience. And so far, this has paid off with growing sales, popularity and satisfied users.

In 2019, however, we hope to see OnePlus finally raise the bar in terms of camera performance, the one area where its phones still feel a bit behind the premium flagships out there.

    BlackBerry Key3
    Expected release: June 2019

A phone with a physical keyboard will likely continue to exist in 2019 and it will most likely be called the BlackBerry Key3. And you should not ignore it: not only typing on a physical keyboard gives that weird satisfaction, every key doubles as a shortcut and the whole keyboard works as a trackpad.

The Key3 can back this up with a more powerful chip and an improved camera, so it might well be the different phone to look out for in 2019.

    Second Half of 2019

    Samsung Galaxy Note 10
Expected release: August - September 2019

Samsung has shaken the dust off its shoulders after the Note 7 battery explosion scandal and it has brought us the excellent Note 8 and Note 9, with the latter featuring a big, long-lasting and secure 4,000mAh battery. We hope the Note 10 doubles down on this further pushing Samsung to the territory of battery excellence, plus we expect a faster and smoother performance, more S Pen tricks, an even better camera. Most of all, we are looking to a Samsung that is committed to giving us timely software updates in 2019.

    Xiaomi Pocophone F2
Expected release: August - September 2019

The Pocophone F1 was the surprise of 2018: a phone with a killer, $350 price yet a flagship processor, big battery and impressive performance.

And we hope the next Pocophone, the Poco F2, sticks with that "affordable flagship" mentality. The phone should arrive somewhere in August, if Xiaomi, the company behind this phone, sticks with a 1-year upgrade cadence.

    Moto Z4
Expected release: August - September 2019

It's now been about three years since Motorola showed us its Moto Mods system of magnetically snapping mods. Back then, modular phones seemed like all the rage, but these days, we don't see many people still subscribed to that idea and we feel it might just be time for Moto to let go of that idea and go in a new direction with a true all-out Moto Z4 flagship with a focus on perfecting the three essentials of a modern smartphone: performance, camera and battery life.

    Apple iPhone 2019 series
Expected release: Friday, September 21st, 2019

The biggest launch of the year in terms of sales, however, still goes to Apple's iPhones.

It's way too early to predict what Apple has in store for us in 2019, but we do expect it will stick with its premium pricing and we will have three phones: two premium, $1,000+ models and a third, more affordable phone with some compromises.

Apple has its own hardware team that makes the world's fastest phone chips and we expect it to remain in the lead of phone performance charts in 2019. We also would not be surprised to see the company make its own graphics chip, as well as reveal first details about its rumored augmented reality glasses. Of course, bezels (especially those on the iPhone XR) should become much smaller and we hope Apple figures this out as well.

Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL
    Expected release: October 2019

    [CENTER]14Google-Pixel-3-Review-047.jpg[/CENTER

Techtober 2019 shapes up to be super busy, but the true star of the month will likely be the new Pixel 4 family.

One of the very best (if not the best) smartphone camera around will get better next year, pushing the boundaries of what you think is possible from a phone shooter. Google was also killed with criticism against the big and rather obnoxious notch on the Pixel 3 XL, so we hope it listens and thinks of a more elegant design.

But the biggest thing about the 2019 series of Pixels will be availability. We really hope Google finally takes its phones seriously and makes them available in more than just a handful of countries.

    OnePlus 7T
    Expected release: October 2019

Half a month after the OnePlus 7, we expect OnePlus to strike once again with the OnePlus 7T, a phone that will be about gradual improvements and polishing touches to the original OnePlus 7.

    LG V50 ThinQ

    Expected release: October 2019

LG's second important phone of the year will likely be the big and powerful LG V50 ThinQ, which should build on top of the foundation that LG lays with the G8.

We don't know much about the V50 just yet, but we expect at least a triple camera system and a focus on it providing an excellent music and camera experience.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro and Mate 30
    Expected release: October 2019

We don't yet know much about the upcoming Huawei Mate 30 series, but we do know that those will be the likely top-tier phones by Chinese company Huawei.

Traditionally, the Mate series are about an all-out smartphone experience, in a way similar to what Samsung's Galaxy Note is to the S series.

So we expect just that with a sprinkle of camera magic in a new camera system made in collaboration with Leica.

    Razer Phone 3
    Expected release: October 2019

Gaming phones might be here to stay and the Razer Phone 3 might be the phone that gamers will look forward to buying in the 2019 Holiday seasons. Razer was the first to introduce high frame-rate displays to its series of phones, a big advantage for competitive mobile gamers.

The Razer Phone 3 will need to improve more than just its gaming performance if it wants to become more popular, though. Things like the phone's camera are definitely not quite on par with premium flagships out there and we hope Razer finds the right technology to improve that, while keeping a good battery life and fast performance in the Razer Phone 3.

    Xiaomi Mi Mix 4
Expected release: October - November 2019

Chinese company Xiaomi has been making some truly ahead-of-the-time models and the Mi Mix series is a prime example. The full-screen, bezel-less series should get a new member in late 2019 with a phone that will bring faster performance, tinier bezels and an improved camera, while sticking with a premium look and feel.
