We don’t do covers, and you’re about to hear why."

IDLES took on Kanye West‘s ‘Yeezus’ album track ‘Send It Up’ during a live session for Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1.

You can listen to the full session via BBC iPlayer here, in which the band also played ‘Danny Nedelko‘ and their latest single ‘Great‘, both of which will appear on their upcoming second album ‘Joy As An Act Of Resistance‘.

“We don’t do covers, and you’re about to hear why,” joked frontman Joe Talbot before they played the 2013 track. We do [play covers] sometimes, but not publicly. We have families.” Their unconventional take begins at approximately 21 minutes into the broadcast.

Idles’ frontman Joe Talbot also spoke to Mac about the difficulties the band faced with the writing of their second album. ” We had loads of energy and lots of ideas that we wanted to flesh out into a second album,” he said. “We rushed the writing and overthought things and weren’t enjoying ourselves so we scrapped about a year and a half’s worth of writing.

“We sat down and had a mindful chat with each other about why we weren’t happy and the result was ‘Joy As An Act Of Resistance’ where we started to look inwards and enjoy our own skin and our own flaws and not worry about what people think.”

“It’s about self-reflection and embracing mistakes and allowing yourself to make as many mistakes as you want… just not worrying about the rules so much and enjoying the journey.”

Joy as an Act of Resistance’ will be released via Partisan on August 31. Speaking of the LP’s inspirations, Talbot said, “This album is an attempt to be vulnerable to our audience and to encourage vulnerability; a brave naked smile in this shitty new world.”

Earlier this month, IDLES responded to Matty Healy after the frontman reportedly said there’s “no big bands doing anything as interesting as” The 1975.
