Is he taking on Freddie's legendary pipes?

As Rami Malek continues to wow audiences as Freddie Mercury in Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, there’s one thing in particular that continues to puzzle fans – did he actually sing?

Instead, the vocals we hear in Bohemian Rhapsody are those of Malek mixed together with Marc Matel, who has previously won huge plaudits for his inimitable takes of Queen on YouTube.

“It is an amalgamation of a few voices”, Malek himself revealed in a recent interview. “But predominantly it is my hope and the hope of everyone that we will hear as much Freddie as possible. I think that is the goal for all of us.”

However, the mixed vocal doesn’t feature on the film’s soundtrack, which is instead comprised solely of original Queen recordings.

Their iconic 1985 Live Aid performance features on the soundtrack with all five songs: ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Hammer to Fall’, ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’, ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘We Are the Champions’.

Upon release last week, the film won huge plaudits for Malek’s performance as Mercury, but critics were widely critical of the rest of the film.

“Despite its electrifying subject, is a conventional, middle-of-the-road, cut-and-dried, play-it-safe, rather fuddy-duddy old-school biopic, a movie that skitters through events instead of sinking into them. And it treats Freddie’s personal life — his sexual-romantic identity, his loneliness, his reckless adventures in gay leather clubs — with kid-gloves reticence”, wrote Variety’s Owen Gleiberman.
