The DJ pulled a Kanye-style stage invasion earlier this week

Charlie Sloth has announced he is leaving Radio 1 immediately, following his stage invasion at an awards show earlier this week.

Sloth had been due to leave his regular weekday evening slot on the station, The 8th, in the next few weeks, but he took to Twitter earlier today (October 20) to confirm he is leaving early.

The presenter, 37, who also fronted the Saturday night rap show on Radio 1 and 1Xtra, tweeted: “I’ve decided not do the remaining 10 shows on the BBC that I initially agreed. I love you all. Thank you ❤”

Radio one confirmed his exit in a statement that read: “We have agreed with Charlie Sloth that he will not be presenting any further editions of The 8th and The Rap Show for Radio 1 and 1Xtra. New presenters will be announced for both shows in coming weeks.”

His departure comes after an incident at an awards show earlier this week that saw the presenter invade the stage and insult fellow DJ Edith Bowman.

Sloth had been nominated alongside Bowman in the Best Specialist Music Show category at this year’s Audio and Radio Industry Awards (ARIAs).

But when Bowman was announced as the winner on Thursday evening (18 October), Sloth invaded the stage and grabbed the mic before launching into a Kanye West-style rant.

He shouted: “Edith Bowman, fuck your life”.

When the audience began to jeer, Sloth raised his arm as if in victory and said: “I just wanna say BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra, Saturday night Rap Show. Fuck your life. God bless.”

Edith Bowman later took to Twitter to share her reaction, tweeting: “Morning Charlie Sloth, hope you are feeling OK this morning.”

While the following morning, Sloth took to Twitter to explain his actions and apologise to Bowman.

He tweeted: “Soooo the Arias… it was supposed to be a bit of bants with me jumping on stage, starting with me saying “ok ima let you finish” 🤷♂ it wasn’t directed at Edith, i love Edith and like I said so does my Mum ❤ I’ve apologised to Edith privately, I’m sorry to anyone I upset.”

Sloth recently announced his departure from Radio 1 and 1Xtra after ten years with the station. At the time, he said: “After almost 10 years of dedicating my life to BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra and achieving everything I set out to do, I have decided the time has come to leave the BBC and seek a new challenge.”

Following the incident, the BBC and the DJ announced today that Sloth will no longer fulfill the rest of his remaining shows on the station.
