A seedbox is a private dedicated or semi-dedicated server used to keep your torrents seeding 24/7. It's like a computer with a very good internet connection on which you only use a P2P client.

How is this possible when your ISP gives you a capped dedicated amount?

A lot of the 100mbit servers are actually capped at 3TB or around that (which is pretty huge) although there are plenty of truly unlimited providers.

The main thing is you are basically paying for a slot in a server - what your average Joe Bloggs is getting on there at home internet is nothing in comparison

Ohh. That's pretty cool. I see what you are saying. I am sure it isn't free. What's the costs? Requirements? Any security for the user? I.E., security from other users using the seedbox and security from 3rd party companies collecting your IP?

most feedboxes support either SFTP, FTPS or openVPN. These allow you to connect to the seedbox via an encrypted connection so your ISP cant see what the traffic is. Also the traffic shaping software that some ISP use to throttle P2P traffic can't work as it only sees encrypted traffic. All the can identify is a lot of traffic from you to the seedbox IP. Most seedboxes allow you to either VPN to them or proxy through them so all you web browsing shows you as having the IP address of your seedbox and no one can see your real IP. Take your time when choosing a seed box there are some real crap ones out there that will proably screw up your ratio. Stick with the well known ones like:-
feralhosting.com <-- Needs a little bit of setting up
    xirvik.com <-- Good for a beginner

Great! I guess what I am wondering is, let's say for instance I have an ISP that gives me a line of 20mbps DOWN / 5 mbps UP. Can you appear to download/upload more than those amounts? I have heard if you have a seedbox, you can upload way faster than what you are given.

If you have a seedbox you are not downloading anything your seedbox is doing it for you on a 100mbit line. Then if you want anything you have downloaded on your seedbox you just FTP or HTTP download it to your home computer. The speed you download the files will be up to your connection
