VLC Media Player, already everyone’s favorite free media player, has gone 2.0, adding support for a wide variety of new video formats and devices, and making bug fixes and changes that are sure to make it even more popular.

“After 485 million downloads of VLC 1.1.x versions, VideoLAN and the VLC development team present VLC 2.0.0 ‘Twoflower’, a major new release,” says the VideoLAN organization developers behind VLC.

VLC 2.0 promises faster video decoding, and the ability to play even more video formats (as if it doesn’t already play darn near everything as it is), most notably the HD and professional-grade codecs: H.264, VP3, VP8, JPEG-2000, Mpeg-4 ASP/DivX, and RV3/RV4.

For those accustomed to grainy, pixelated subtitles VLC 2.0 offers higher quality subtitles, and uses a new video filters to enhance the quality of video playback.

VLC 2.0 adds support for new devices like Blu-Ray Disc players, SDI capture cards, and QTKit devices.

Mac users get the biggest payout of all: a wholly redesigned window interface available in either Lion grey or QTX black. VLC 2.0 also offers them improved extension support and Lion integration.
