The Oculus Rift VR headset isn’t yet available for consumer purchase, but some OR developer kits have found their way into resale in China. They’re being sold from developers to average consumers who have yet to wait until the Oculus VR headset is available. Resale figures are so high that “We were forced to suspend an entire country from purchasing,” Oculus responded.

The problem with the Oculus developer kits is that with resale in China, the supply for global VR developers will diminish; in other words, there won’t be enough kits available for genuine developers that want to help advance Oculus’ platform. “Our product, in its current form, is a developer kit, meant for developers that develop VR content. We are looking into alternative ways to make sure that our development kits are getting into legitimate developer hands in China. If you are an enthusiast, we kindly ask that you wait for the consumer Rift. It will be worth the wait,” said Oculus in a public statement.

As for legitimate developers who’ve ordered their Oculus DK2 kits, shipping times start this month – despite the fact that some developers may not receive their VR headset kits until August.

Oculus must now consider “alternative ways” to get developer kits into China, seeing that sales have been halted. How Oculus will respond to this is anyone’s guess, but it just goes to show the risk associated with placing any platform for development outside of company quarters. If you want to get your hands on Oculus’s VR headset, wait until the final version is released next Fall.
