Microsoft’s takeover of SwiftKey, the company behind the popular third-party keyboard app for Android and iOS and bearing the same time, is now complete, so it can now go forward with its plans to integrate it into its own solutions.

In an announcement today, Harry Shum, Executive Vice President, Technology and Research, confirmed that Microsoft entered into a definitive agreement to take over SwiftKey after the original deal reached in February.
In case you’re wondering what’s next for SwiftKey, Microsoft swears that it’ll continue to improve the keyboard on both Android and iOS. And obviously, it will be integrated into the company’s own Word Flow keyboard, but it’s not yet clear how this integration is going to work.
“This acquisition is a great example of Microsoft’s commitment to bringing its software and services to all platforms. We’ll continue to develop SwiftKey’s market-leading keyboard apps for Android and iOS as well as explore scenarios for the integration of the core technology across the breadth of our product and services portfolio. Moreover, SwiftKey’s predictive technology aligns with Microsoft’s investments and ambition to develop intelligent systems that can work more on the user’s behalf and under their control,” Shum said in today’s announcement.
SwiftKey on Windows phones Shum went on to confirm that there are plans to merge the apps and offer a more powerful solution, but he only said that more information will be shared in the coming months.
“I’m extremely excited about the technology, talent and market position SwiftKey brings to us with this acquisition, and about how this further demonstrates Microsoft’s desire to bring key apps and technologies to platforms from Windows to Android to iOS,” he said.
Microsoft has been on a shopping spree lately, as it took over several popular Android and iOS apps that are likely to be integrated into its own products and at some point land on Windows 10 Mobile as well. SwiftKey is likely to follow the same path, so it should also arrive on Windows phones too.
