Microsoft hasn't paid too much attention to File Explorer in Windows 10, so it lacks tab support, despite the fact that this was one of the most requested features for the new operating system.

Unsurprisingly, designers across the world create their own interpretations of the File Explorer, so it's not that hard to find concepts imagining the implementation of tabs in this built-in Windows 10 app.

But this concept that reached the web a couple of days ago and that is rapidly gaining votes on UserVoice makes a lot more sense than all the other ones do, and not only that it looks good but it also comes with features that could be introduced by Microsoft in real life.

Edge tab style

The first thing you might notice in this concept is the familiar UI, as the designer worked specifically to make it perfectly blend into the operating system.

Its looks are inspired by Microsoft Edge, the new browser that's offered as default in the overhauled operating system.

The new menu has the same features as the ribbon, but as the designer explains, is displayed in a much more compressed space such as a single bar. You can tap or click home, share, view, or any other button to reveal commands and functions from the corresponding button, click the tab button again to collapse commands and only show the tab buttons.

The right side of the screen is being used for what the concept creator calls a “combined details and preview pane.” You can “stretch pane to make preview image larger like the preview pane currently behaves,” he explains.

All in all, it's very clear that users expected File Explorer to be significantly revamped in Windows 10, but since this didn't happen, Microsoft must really take care of this in the next big update for the operating system. According to sources, this should come in October, so Redmond still has some two months to improve File Explorer.
