It's been four years since Dark Souls 3 released to critical acclaim as the final installment to the Dark Souls trilogy, and many fans believe a Dark Souls 4 is only a matter of time. The action RPG series from FromSoftware is immensely popular, so it's unlikely the company is completely done with it. And if the game is actually happening, then when will it release?

Fans hopeful for Dark Souls 4 anytime soon will be disappointed, since FromSoftware and Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki are concentrating on a new IP, Elden Ring, which has a story written by Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin. Since being announced, Elden Ring is seemingly in development limbo after facing delays. Even if Dark Souls 4 is the next game FromSoftware and Miyazaki will work on, that means it's likely years away from releasing.

It's not all bad news, though. Hidetaka Miyazaki has said that he isn't finished with the Dark Souls series. Even at E3 2015, while promoting the upcoming release of Dark Souls 3, Miyazaki said (via a translation from VideoGamer) that the series wouldn't end there. That's great news for Dark Souls fans, but that leaves the future of the series open to interpretation. Will Dark Souls 4 be a direct continuation from the trilogy, a soft reboot, an alternate timeline, or a completely new and original story? Anything is possible.

When Dark Souls 4'S Release Date Could Be

Having Miyazaki confirm he isn't finished with the series is great. However, this still leaves the future of Dark Souls 4 in uncertainty, especially considering Miyazaki may have only been hinting at Dark Souls: Remastered, which released in 2018. That doesn't seem likely, though. From a story standpoint, Dark Souls 3 ended the narrative fans have played thus far, but Dark Souls games have multiples endings, so that doesn't mean everything is unequivocally concluded. It leaves the story of Dark Souls 4 wide open, and Miyazaki and FromSoftware could take the game in all sorts of directions.

Until production finishes on Elden Ring, it's unlikely fans will get any conclusive news on Dark Souls 4. The game is probably still years away from release, likely not arriving until 2022 or 2023. But if Miyazaki's words are anything to go by, there will most certainly be another Dark Souls game in the future.
