Ubisoft has been reticent about any new games coming to the Wii U beyond Watch Dogs, mostly because the company feels as if the console hasn't tapped into a mass market of consumers, yet. Because of this, they don't feel as if it's worth investing into Nintendo's console at the moment.

Nintendo Everything picked up quotes from a recent interview in MCV's latest issue, where they spoke with Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot and their European head, Alan Corre.

One of the things that popped up in the topic was in relation to Ubisoft's support for the Wii U – as some of you know, Electronic Arts is one of the top publishers who has basically abandoned Nintendo at this point. Guillemot was a little less averse to Nintendo's console and cited that they needed to boost up the mass market appeal of the device first...

“If Wii U’s sales continue to multiply, it will quickly come to a mass market. We need the sales to increase so it becomes more mass market, and then we will have the volume we need to justify big marketing campaigns and TV marketing.

“Smash Bros. has always been a big, big property for Nintendo and for gamers. We all know that there are lots of Nintendo fans that are waiting for these big games. When I speak to the fans that come to E3, 90 percent of them are crazy Nintendo fans. They really love Nintendo and the games they do. If they can quickly come and buy a Wii U, it would be good.”

The concept of that seems quite weird, as a lot of gamers questioned how they could mention that the Wii U needs to reach a mass market when the Xbox One is still trailing behind in third-place and Ubisoft continues to show a lot of support for the system?

The reality is that the Wii U still has a 2 million SKU lead on Microsoft's console, so talk about install base and sales seems completely and entirely moot. That's not to mention that if a game is good and receives proper marketing, it will sell on the Wii U, as proven with Mario Kart 8's tremendous performance throughout June in North America and Japan.

One user commented on the Nintendo Everything post, saying...

“You could argue that because of the sales ilustrated above they are justified in their decision to not put out games for Wii U, but when you take into account the games they have released were post-poned, canceled, given less content, or neglected by them. The only people at fault here are themselves.”

Watch Dogs is coming for the Wii U, but it was delayed to the holiday season. It's not expected to sell as much as the PS4 or Xbox One versions due to the long delay and the fact that it'll be competing with hard hitting Nintendo titles such as Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2 and Super Smash Bros.

Even still, Alan Corre commented that Nintendo is doing great things in the marketplace, saying...

“I was very happy to see Nintendo doing well with their E3 conference and unveil the new open-world Zelda, Miyamoto is back creating things, and that’s excellent for the industry. Smash Bros. and Mario Maker – these concepts are second to none. We are really happy to see that Nintendo has a lot of good franchises, because we feel that it still has a love affair with families, and we really need the living room to offer possibilities to families to play games.”

Much like EA, there are no new games on the horizon for the Wii U from Ubisoft, for now. The company does have two exclusive games waiting in the wings; as mentioned, they won't release anything else for the Wii U with a big marketing push until the console's install base hits mass market appeal.
