Nearly five years after Super Meat Boy creator Team Meat said "there won't ever be a Super Meat Boy 2," the notoriously challenging platformer could see a sequel after all.

Speaking to Game Informer, Team Meat's Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes actually found inspiration to make a proper Super Meat Boy sequel while working on their upcoming mobile autorunner Super Meat Boy Forever.

"There were aspects of Forever that were moves that Meat Boy did... that we were prototyping that felt like they could be better used in a sequel," said McMillen. "The future of Meat Boy is definitely up in the air, but a sequel is something that I wouldn't be opposed to doing even though we both said that we wouldn't do it."

Back in late 2010, Team Meat had several reasons for not doing a Super Meat Boy sequel, especially so soon after the game's launch. Not only did the duo want to avoid coming off as desperate to cash in on their initial success, but they also claim they "did it right the first time" and didn't want to end up copying the same Meat Boy formula.

Now that some time has passed and Team Meat feels more confidence in Super Meat Boy 2's potential, McMillen and Refenes are exploring their options.

"We wouldn't even be mentioning anything about a sequel if we didn't feel like it was realistic enough," said McMillen.

Despite their optimism, McMillen and Refenes are not officially announcing Super Meat Boy 2 at this time. The two are still working on cat management sim Mew-Genics and Super Meat Boy Forever.

The original Super Meat Boy is also launching on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita later this year.
