PS5 Gets First Official Box Art for Spider-Man Miles Morales

Sony has revealed the first official box art for a PlayStation 5 game, as the world has been given a glimpse of the case used for Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The launch line-up of PlayStation 5 games mostly consists of cross-gen titles, but the system has one big exclusive in the form of Spider-Man: Miles Morales which will be arriving in Holiday 2020.

Sony kicked off its PS5 reveal event with the announcement for Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which stars a beloved version of the titular webslinger in a standalone adventure. The game is set a year after Marvel's Spider-Man and The City That Never Sleeps DLC, and it follows Miles as he fights crime in Harlem.

The PlayStation 5 will be released during the 2020 holiday season and Sony has revealed the first-ever box art for a game appearing on the system. The official PlayStation Blog has uploaded two screenshots of the box art for Spider-Man: Miles Morales. One of the new additions is the PlayStation Studios logo, but the box art itself is pretty standard. It's strange that the case is so similar to the kind used by PS4 games.

When comparing the boxes of a PS4 and PS5 game, the only major difference is the border at the top. The PS4 box has a blue border that is dark on the left side and bright on the right side, with the PS4 name and logo in white. The PS5 box art has a white border, with the PS5 name & logo in black on the top. It's hard to tell from a single screenshot, but both cases seem to be made from plastic that is the same shade of PlayStation-styled blue. Usually, video game companies change things up between generations, so that gamers can easily distinguish between them on store shelves. There are over a billion PlayStation 4 games in the wild and in people's collections at home, so it would have made sense to use differently-colored boxes. For example, Nintendo changed from cyan boxes for Wii U games to bright red with the Switch boxes.

Sony has been playing it safe with the PlayStation 5, especially in comparison to Microsoft and Nintendo. The reveal of the PS5 logo surprised no one, as it just swapped out the '4' for a '5'. Still, PlayStation is currently in the number one console brand in the world, even beating Nintendo in the home market, so it makes sense that the company wouldn't want to rock the boat with something drastically different. With that in mind, the PS5 boxes being similar to those used by PS4 games could be an attempt on Sony's part to maintain a feeling of continuity going into a new console generation.

The PlayStation 5 and Spider-Man: Miles Morales are due to be released during the 2020 holiday season.
