The end of 2020 promises to be an exciting time, as players will finally get their hands on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Both Sony and Microsoft have slowly revealed more about the next-gen consoles, but there are still plenty of questions waiting to be answered.

There are plenty of topics fans want to know more about, both in terms of hardware and software. One of the biggest questions on every console buyer's mind is storage space. As this is a console people will own for years, storage can be a big sticking point.

PlayStation fans will likely want to make plans early in terms of buying expanded storage, or planning out how many games to buy. Here's the PS5's storage capacity, and how many games it will fit.

How Much Storage Will The PS5 Have?

The good news is that Sony has already detailed the storage capacity of PS5, along with a handful of other specs. The PS5 will launch with a custom 825GB SSD. This is a sizable upgrade over what the PS4 comes with. The big change, of course, comes with the upgrade to SSD from HDD. SSDs are much faster at reading data than HDDs, which could result in shorter load times and better overall performance. While 825GB isn't a ton, it is an improvement over the 500GB the base PS4 comes with.

Keep in mind that this is simply the default version of PS5, and Sony could easily launch a second version of the console that comes with more storage. Luckily, Sony has also given players a couple of options for expanding their storage. First off, the PS5 will let players expand their storage by purchasing an extra SSD called an NVMe drives. Players will, of course, need to make sure the one they purchase is compatible with PS5. At the same time, the PS5 will support external storage via USB. While it's nice to have options, players first need to know how much storage they'll need.

How Much Space Will PS5 Games Take?

While the capacity of the PS5 is known, the big unanswered question is just how much space PS5 games will take up. At the moment, there are no PS5 games that have a confirmed install size, but players should expect them to be pretty sizable. The average install size of PS4 games is roughly 40GB, but certain titles have blown past that, like the 73.7 GB of Final Fantasy 7 Remake or the staggering 175GB of Modern Warfare. If PS5 games exceed that, players will run out of storage space quite quickly.

As a lowball estimate, assume each PS5 game averages the 40GB that the PS4 does. Taking that into account that's roughly 20 PS5 games that can be installed on the system before needing to clear up space. That's the absolute most player should expect, but it'll likely be much smaller than that. PS5 games will be using new technology, and by nature they'll probably be larger than the previous generation. Because of that, players are probably looking at roughly 10 titles with the starting SSD.
