New screenshots from Cyberpunk 2077 were released, giving fans the closest look at what gameplay will look like to date. Polish developers CD Projekt Red, famous for having produced the critically acclaimed Witcher video game series, announced Cyberpunk 2077 back in May 2012, and it has been in full-scale production ever since the team finished the Blood and Wine DLC for The Witcher 3.

Based on Mike Pondsmith's tabletop RPG, Cyberpunk 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 will be set in Night City, the dystopian center of crime and chaos. Marcin Pryzbylowicz will be returning to write the score for the game, after how well received his score for The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt was.

The screenshots were released on CD Projekt Red's official Twitter earlier today. There are four in total, with the second one in particular looking as if it could have been directly lifted from gameplay. The second screenshot also heavily resembles a shot shown in the E3 gameplay presentation, which gave attending press their very first look at the project. Now, with these new screenshots having been revealed, it seems that an actual gameplay trailer could be on the horizon.

The screenshots give an indication of what to expect in Cyberpunk 2077 - a juxtaposition of grit and hi-tech gadgets of the future. From facial implants, to a parlor that looks like a shop that sells cybernetic enhancements, Night City is a place where people need to use everything at their disposal in order to survive. As per gameplay itself, it has been confirmed that the game will take place in first-person (and for good reason), which testifies to the possibility of the second screenshot showcasing an actual in-game encounter. Pondsmith's board game features a diverse range of classes and characters, so if that is anything to go by, Cyberpunk 2077 will be fantastic - especially considering that it has been placed in the capable hands of CD Projekt Red.

Amidst the controversy about microtransactions, CD Projekt Red famously announced that they would be "leaving greed to others," while reminding fans of the sincerity of The Witcher 3. In relation to "leaving greed to others," CD Projekt Red proved their commitment to their fans at E3 this year, as the trailer began with the screen being "hacked." Within the codes displayed for the purpose of the "hack" were actual codes for The Witcher 3: Game of the Year Edition on Steam. The hack screen also contained a line of code which read, "w3 l35V3 9R33d 2 0TH3rZ." The good guys of gaming really do leave greed to others.

Although no release date for Cyberpunk 2077 has been confirmed yet, the screenshots uploaded today highlight that the project is well underway. For now, the screenshots will have to suffice, as fans await the next reveal trailer.
