In a meeting with investors held yesterday in Japan, Sony‘s CEO Kaz Hirai divulged some updated data on subscribers to PlayStation services.

The most striking figure is perhaps the one related to half of the entire PlayStation 4 userbase (more than 7 million units of the hardware have been sold as of April 6) being subscribed to PlayStation Plus. Moreover, Hirai added that over 52 million of users worldwide are active on the PlayStation Network/Sony Entertainment Network; finally, he also spoke favorably of the success of the PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, which surpassed 4.5 million of downloads.

This certainly bodes well for Sony Computer Entertainment, although it is unclear how much profit is made on PS Plus – we know that the company has to provide some compensation to developers/publishers as well in order to persuade them to give away their games for free, and for example we’ve had Stewart Gilray (CEO of Just Add Water) saying that he wouldn’t normally recommend fellow developers to put their game on PS Plus during the launch phase.
