Square Enix has announced its MMO Final Fantasy XIV officially has over 5 million registered accounts.

The figure includes players from around the globe, including those in Europe, North America, Japan and China, while excluding anyone who has a free trial account. Final Fantasy XIV is one of the few MMOs left on the market to still charge a monthly subscription fee, which makes this all the more impressive.

Considering the MMO was written off following a disastrous launch, it's an immense achievement the game has been turned around to be so successful and something Square Enix should be proud of. We recently got a chance to talk to the man behind the redesign, Naoki Yoshida, and he didn't hold back in telling us about the difficulties faced along the way.

The last time we got an update on player numbers was back in February, when 4 million accounts had been created. The interim has seen the MMO's first expansion, Heavensward, launch to positive reviews, which is likely a partial cause of the uptick.

There's a host of additional content coming to the MMO in the future that's likely to see the above number rise even higher - most recently it was teased Blitzball from Final Fantasy X and some sort of tie-in event for Final Fantasy XV could make their way to the title.
