Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered is a game that would be high on the wish list of most first-person shooter fans, but recent reports suggest that it may be missing some integral features. When first released, Modern Warfare 2 was a tremendous success, doubling down on the reimagining of the franchise that came with the first Modern Warfare. It delivered a campaign full of twists and turns, including the now-notorious ‘No Russian’ sequence that was recently part of the White House’s violent video game reel.

As good as the single player was, however, Modern Warfare 2 was more than just its campaign. The game also included the terrific Special Ops mode, which mixed single player and cooperative play, but the star of the show for many was its online multiplayer. That’s the reason why the game sits atop many a list of the best Call of Duty games of all time.

However, these multiplayer modes may well be missing from a potential remaster of the game. According to CharlieINTEL sources, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered does exist, but the game will not include multiplayer modes and will instead only be focused on the single player campaign. This means that the Special Ops modes, too, will be missing from the final product.

On top of that, it appears as though there could have been a transition behind the scenes at Activision in terms of development. Whereas Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered was developed by Raven Software, instead sources suggest that Raven is not involved this time around. Instead, it’s suggested that Beenox could be taking over, having previously helped develop the campaign of Modern Warfare Remastered.

The news needs to be taken with a pinch of salt for now, until such reports can be verified. However, fans of the original game may be disappointed if the remaster of Modern Warfare 2 does not include the multiplayer modes, and the idea of the title without its online multiplayer may lose its allure. After all, it was the online multiplayer that helped make Modern Warfare 2 into such a powerhouse in the first place. As such, some may be wondering exactly why Activision would make such a decision.

One potential answer may be that Activision is trying to stop Call of Duty games from cannibalizing their own player base. Modern Warfare Remastered was a huge success, and some may suspect that its popularity took away potential players from Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which remains something of a damp squib in the series. With Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 confirmed for this year, Activision may want to avoid losing players from one of the most anticipated games of the year. Nonetheless, it seems like something of a drastic step to take given Modern Warfare 2‘s status in the franchise.
