Ever since its release back in November of 2014, Halo: The Master Chief Collection has been plagued with issues. Many fans reported game breaking bugs and sporadic matchmaking success right out of the gate, and things have only gotten worse. 343 Industries, who took the Halo reigns after Bungie bowed out of the franchise, has released patch after patch to fix the broken game, but each consecutive fix only seems to reveal new issues.

These problems brought the once thriving Halo online community to a standstill, as fans waited to be able to play the game they had waited so patiently for. Despite this, a loyal following clung to the game, and fans honed their skills in Halo’s tactical gameplay, provided they could manage to connect to a match.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection’s issues have now lead to the cancellation of an official tournament. The Halo Championship Series brings together the best of the best in the Halo scene to duke it out for the title of champion, but spotty matchmaking has lead to the competition being shuttered.

The Halo Championship Series is played remotely, allowing gamers all around the globe to compete without having to travel. But when gamers were consistently unable to join matches, 343 Industries decided to yank the plug, citing “party joinability issues.”

The tournament, based specifically around the Anniversary edition of Halo 2, launched officially on April 25th, but connectivity issues have made many matches almost impossible. The tournament was originally anticipated to span two days, with players fighting it out in two separate brackets. The initial matches for the tournament went as planned on Saturday, but matchmaking issues got increasingly worse as the tournament went on. On Sunday, 343 finally nixed the tournament, tweeting:

343 has not announced a reschedule date for the tournament, but the company has stated that they are actively working to fix the issue. The cancellation of the Halo Championship Series is the latest in a long line of issues with Halo: The Master Chief Collection, with outcry over problems with the game becoming so severe that 343 had to apologize and offer fans free copies of Halo: ODST and a Halo 2 multiplayer map for the inconvenience.

Halo is a marquee title with a strong fan base, but problems are quickly killing any momentum Halo: The Master Chief Collection has managed to get. With Halo 5 right around the corner, we’ll have to wait and see if Halo fans are going to be willing to forgive and forget.
