Following its Golden Globe victories for Transparent this past Sunday (the show was crowned Best Comedy/Musical series and Jeffrey Tambor won for acting), Amazon’s making sure to strike while the iron’s hot by signing one of Hollywood’s most prolific director’s, Woody Allen, to his first television series ever.

Amazon Studios has announced that Allen has been given a full season order for his currently-untitled sitcom that will have episodes written and directed by Woody himself. Furthermore, upon its debut, the series will be available to customers in the U.S., U.K., and Germany.

While scarce on plot and cast details, Amazon Studios Vice President Roy Price did state:

“Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series… from Annie Hall to Blue Jasmine, Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year.”

Considering Amazon can now go to various creatives and say they can promise potential award recognition and a guaranteed push come award season itself, it should become a lot easier for the studio to lock down even more high-profile talent (joining the ranks of The Shield’s Shawn Ryan, Lost’s Carlton Cuse and Pacific Rim’s Guillermo Del Toro). However, these names don’t change the fact that the studio’s first major award win came from a show no one would have guessed would succeed (from a creator/showrunner that most of the general population wouldn’t recognize off the bat).

Yes, Woody will most certainly boost the studio’s credibility, but what will keep Amazon afloat in its war with Netflix is a commitment to locking in projects that may seem to out there even for the home of Orange is the New Black. What no one can say about Amazon is they aren’t trying to push their content in directions that make people say, “wow.” Right now, that’s the studio’s biggest advantage, and no amount of money or name recognition is going to change that anytime soon.
