Connie Nielsen, who stars as Hippolyta in the DC Extended Universe films Wonder Woman and Justice League wants to extend the role in a spinoff movie focusing on the Amazon warriors. The release of the upcoming sequel Wonder Woman 1984 was recently delayed to August 14th because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the Danish actress is ready to break the isolation the Amazons fought to maintain from the outside world.

Wonder Woman 1984 will reunite audiences with many favorites from the original film, including Hippolyta. As Diana's mother and leader of Themyscira, she played a big role in Diana's life and will likely continue to do so. Chris Pine will return as Steve Trevor, despite dying in the first film. Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig will also join the cast as two new characters, Maxwell Lord and Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah. Pascal's character in particular is expected to play a role in Steve's resurrection.

In a recent interview, Nielsen spoke about a potential spinoff movie starring the Amazons. While she didn't go into any details, Nielsen did tell Coming Soon she and the cast "would love to, we would love to do that." At the end of 2019, Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins told fans at Comic Con Experience in São Paulo, Brazil she and Warner Bros. were considering a spinoff film based on Wonder Woman's Amazons and their mythical world of Themyscira. Jenkins then elaborated on the spinoff, saying she had it "all mapped out."

While Queen Hippolyta may have formed Princess Diana of Themyscira out of clay and still been battle-ready, Jenkins wants to take a breather after Wonder Woman 1984's release. This could mean some time away from the franchise. It's also unknown for sure if a spinoff with the Amazons would come before or after Wonder Woman 3. The story could be dependent on the trilogy's conclusion or stand completely on its own. It's possible the ending of Wonder Woman 1984 will lend some clarity, when fans are finally able to see it.

The Amazon world offers seemingly endless possibilities. Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman debuted in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Diana Prince had a full backstory to fill in. However, the warrior women of Paradise Island's story can be fodder for prequels going all the way back to the Ancient Greeks and the Olympian gods. Sculpted and brought to life by Aphrodite over three thousand years ago, Hippolyta met Hercules himself in personal combat. This makes Wonder Woman's Amazons fertile ground for inspiration and a spinoff.
