That Walking Dead Spin-Off Show is Still Knee-Deep in Development

You would think with how much money AMC is making off “The Walking Dead,” that fast-tracking the announced spin-off show would be their top priority. You would be incorrect. According to the network’s executives, while they are still keen to do the show, it’s not anywhere close to being a reality. Heck, it hasn’t even been officially greenlit yet.

Talking to Vulture, AMC suit Joel Stillerman had this to say about the show’s current status:

That show is not as far along [than "Breaking Bad" spin-off "Better Call Saul"]. Robert has some things on his plate. He continues to write every issue of the comic and hasn’t finished season four of The Walking Dead, which he is very intimately involved with and will continue to be. That’s really in the incubation stages… We kicked around a few ideas, but primarily what he’s working on is, what is the idea that gives [him] as clear a mandate to make another version of this show as [he] had for the first one? What is going on [now] is a more philosophical discussion over why there should be another version of the show. Once we answer that, we’ll zero in on the specific creative.

As for that lack of a greenlight, Charlie Collier adds:

What we want to do is not diminish the mothership. What we want to do is find something that everyone involved feels as passionately about as being a unique vehicle and unique enterprise as compared to the original series. We’ll take our time, and we’ll do it right.

Well, they’re certainly saying all the right things, and this being AMC, I guess they have a much better track record when it comes to putting out quality shows than most networks. Of course, Frank Darabont, the man who adapted “The Walking Dead” originally, might say otherwise, as he’s currently suing them for what, a few gazillion dollars?

The mothership returns with the second half of its Season 4 this February 9th.
