Oscar-winner Brad Bird is now working on the script for the long-awaited Pixar sequel The Incredibles 2, but next he’s got a live-action movie coming out – arriving next month in fact – for Walt Disney Studios, titled Tomorrowland. The film isn’t so much based on the Disney theme park attraction of the same name (a la the Pirates of the Caribbean movies) as it was influenced by the history and ideas behind said “land”. Or so the project’s original architect, screenwriter Damon Linelof, has indicated in the past.

Bird and Lindelof (who penned the movie’s script together) weigh in on Tomorrowland in a new featurette (watch it, above), as do the film’s stars: George Clooney and Britt Robertson – the latter from the Under the Dome TV series (and today’s new Nicholas Sparks movie release, The Longest Ride). The U.S. trailers and international promos for the family-friendly sci-fi adventure have made it clear that Robertson (as teenager Casey Newton) is the real protagonist of the story, though.

Mind you, it’s Frank Walker (Clooney) whose actions when he’s a kid (played by Thomas Robinson) actually set the storyline for Tomorrowland in motion. Clooney, via Stitch Kingdom, summed up his character as being a “disenchanted grump who was a bit of a dreamer as a young boy,” before his discovered the movie’s namesake – described in the film’s official synopsis as “an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space” – and realized that certain people from Tomorrowland aren’t so invested in its technological break-throughs being used to benefit everyone, like he is.

Robertson, meanwhile, describes Casey as a “really smart chick” who wants to help create a world that’s “a place that’s full of hope and inspiration, but doesn’t know how to make it so.” That becomes especially true when Casey ends up having to watch her NASA engineer father (Tim McGraw) lose his job – and finds that her own dreams of becoming an astronaut suddenly don’t seem so plausible. Enter the mysterious Athena (Raffey Cassidy) – the third person pictured alongside Robertson and Clooney above (and the source of the Tomorrowland pins).

Athena soon realizes that Casey is the one who can save Tomorrowland (as well as “the future” in general), after the latter gets ahold of the Tomorrowland pin featured in the film’s marketing. Casey thereafter joins forces with Frank, on a grand adventure to make everything right again – and if Bird’s previous movies are any indicator (see: The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), that adventure could well prove to be a rather entertaining one for moviegoers to watch play out.

Tomorrowland opens in U.S. theaters on May 22nd, 2015.
