Now that production on Batman V Superman has wrapped (for the time being), comic book fans collectively turn to the big screen villain team-up Suicide Squad for the next batch of clues surrounding Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ shared superhero universe. Unfortunately, that amount of pressure and speculation has led to just as many wild rumors as reliable updates and confirmed castings.

Thankfully, one more actor can be confirmed to be joining the cast – though in a completely unknown role (not that the mystery will keep fans from pitching their own theories before long).

TheWrap reports that actor Jay Hernandez (Gang Related) is “in negotiations” to join the film, with the notion put forward that he may play a prison inmate alongside Jared Leto’s Joker. The outlet also admits that without concrete information on the size of the role or place in the rumored story, pinning down any potential DC Comics characters for Hernandez is impossible at the moment.

Though he may not be as well-known a name as his fellow cast members (Will Smith’s Deadshot, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, and Leto’s Joker, to name a few), Hernandez has turned in a number of memorable performances in films like Friday Night Lights, Crazy/Beautiful, and World Trade Center, as well as Nashville, Last Resort and Fox’s short-lived Gang-Related set among the ranks of the LAPD’s Gang Task Force.

It’s difficult to know where Hernandez might fit in the film’s story, with rumors of several veteran actors up for roles, and talk of even Deathstroke the Terminator joining in on the action. It seems just as likely for Hernandez to wind up playing a government operative – alongside Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) or Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) - as a criminal on the side of the film’s nefarious stars. Of course, there’s always the chance that Hernandez is being entrusted with an existing DC character, since any criminal locked up alongside the Clown Prince of Crime would have to be worthy of note.

The good news is that the actor has managed to contribute solid performances in even the smallest of roles. So if this is a sign of the talent being sought by director David Ayer for even bit parts, then it’s even more reason to hope that Suicide Squad will be a worthwhile action film – not just another brick in DC’s shared universe foundations.

Are there any character rumored for the story, or tied to the comic book source material that you feel would be a fit for Hernandez? Feel free to share your own ideas and thoughts in the comments.

Suicide Squad will hit theaters on August 5, 2016.
