Despite earning a respectable $71 million at the domestic box office, director Roland Emmerich’s Stargate has never really been considered a bonafide blockbuster. However, the sci-fi film did create a devoted fanbase that only flourished with the passing years and the success of TV shows like Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.

For years, both Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin have expressed interest in returning to the franchise, and we recently learned that the plan had evolved from a sequel to the 1994 original film into a reboot of the series. Now, with Emmerich back on board to direct this new film as a remake of his initial work, we have new information on who else will help bring the franchise back to the big screen after an absence of more than 20 years.

According to THR, Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods will write the Stargate reboot, which Devlin is returning to produce. The pair are relative newcomers but notably worked with Emmerich on the in-development Independence Day 2, and reportedly it was their script that ultimately led Fox to green light the film.

The fact that Emmerich is re-teaming with Wright and Woods may bode well for the Independence Day sequel, but the Stargate reboot/remake may ultimately prove to be an even more difficult proposition. That first film built an entire franchise that has continued to grow, and the prospect of revisiting the same material will inevitably lead to comparisons, meaning that this new Stargate must win over new fans and please those who grew up with the original.

Considering that these writers have little previous work to refer back to, it’s too early to say if they’re up to the task. Yet, in the long term, Emmerich and Devlin’s decision to refresh the entire Stargate continuity is ultimately a smart one, especially considering the success of a reboot may mean that their original vision for the series will finally come to fruition. Now that the core creative team appears to be coming together, perhaps the much-discussed Stargate reboot may finally gain some traction.

Of course, the next big question on everyone’s minds is who will replace original stars Kurt Russell and James Spader in the leads. Who would you like to see, Screen Ranters? Are you looking forward to the new Stargate? Sound off in the comments section below.
