Ron Howard says he is in talks to bring the world of his 1988 film Willow back to life.

The director and producer said on MTV's Happy, Sad, Confused podcast that "there are some really serious discussions going on" to revive the property as a sequel series for the forthcoming Disney+ streaming service with Jon Kasdan, one of the writers of Solo: A Star Wars Story, which Howard also directed.

The 1988 fantasy film starring Warwick Davis was based on a story by George Lucas and produced by Lucasfilm, which is now part of Disney.

Disney+ declined comment.

"[Kasdan] kept hounding me about Willow the whole time we were shooting [Solo], and also kept hounding [Lucasfilm head] Kathy Kennedy," Howard told Happy, Sad, Confused host Josh Horowitz in an excerpt Horowitz posted on Twitter.

Howard said the series would be a "continuation" of the movie, which starred Davis as the title character, a young man who reluctantly takes on a critical role in protecting an infant from a tyrannical queen who fears the baby will eventually bring about her downfall.

Howard said Davis would reprise his role in the series, and that Kasdan "has an inspired take" on the material.

Disney+ is set to launch Nov. 12 with a host of library content and original series including The Mandalorian, High School Musical: The Musical and a docuseries about Disney Imagineering set to become available on day one. A host of other series and films will be added in the first year.
