There will be no new Marvel TV series debuting this year on ABC, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey has announced. It’s interesting that not too long ago Marvel TV head honcho Jeph Loeb maintained that despite numerous projects on other platforms, ABC remains to be the mothership of the company’s small screen offerings. Now with Inhumans at the brink of cancellation and Agents of SHIELD having a better chance of getting renewed for another season, it seems like the only remaining show on the network is their flagship project.

Speaking at the recently held TCA executive session (via Deadline ), Dungey candidly talked about the status of Marvel TV shows in the network. He revealed that they “developed a couple things this season that we don’t think are going to end up going forward, so we’re going to look really carefully about what we do next.” This means it’s more than likely ABC will order another year of SHIELD, considering it will be their last Marvel show on their slate of programs. Given the popularity of comic book properties, it is best that they continue to have at least one on their roster, especially with a show that continues to evolve like Agents of SHIELD.

Earlier this year, Marvel Television’s senior vice-president of original programming Karim Zreik shared that they are looking to venture into several new properties. One with a more comedic tone a la Guardians of the Galaxy and another one that has a similar vibe with Netflix’s Jessica Jones . It was unclear at that point on what platform the lighter-toned planned series will debut, but the female-led one was supposedly being developed particularly for ABC. Whether that aforementioned show is part of the slate that Dungey is referring to remains to be seen.

Despite this, Marvel TV will continue to flourish this year with a slew of existing properties getting new seasons alongside ones waiting to debut. Netflix has Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Punisher — all of which are geared up to continue in respective brand new outings. On top of that, Hulu has Marvel’s Runaways , which has just been renewed , Fox has The Gifted , FX’s has Legion and Freeform has Cloak and Dagger , while New Warriors is being shopped around .

With Disney launching their own streaming outlet and consolidating IPs to beef up their portfolio , it’s a wonder if Marvel not launching any new shows with ABC is a sign that all their series are eventually going to be exclusively available with their upcoming service to attract more patrons. Netflix, for example, will more likely only have the five properties they have with new ones will only be available on the in-development platform .
