Some great blockbusters debuted this summer, but few made an impact on par with Wonder Woman. Patty Jenkins' Amazonian origin story made historic money at the box office, and the film has become a cultural sensation, as well as a symbol of female empowerment. We have been looking back fondly on the movie's release ever since it hit theaters, and a new video has hit the web ahead of its upcoming home release showing Etta Candy looking back fondly on Diana herself. It's hard not to fall in love with Ms. Candy instantly, isn't it? Lucy Davis brings the same dry wit to the character that made her so endearing in Wonder Woman, and the video runs through the events of the film's fish-out-of-water London sequence. We do not yet know what happened between Etta and Diana after the events of the movie, but it's clear that Etta continues to respect her, even if the princess of Themyscira is impossible to shop for in man's world.
That video also highlights some aspects of Wonder Woman that has arguably been lacking from previous DCEU films: heart and humor. Make no mistake, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Suicide Squad all told emotional stories, but Wonder Woman tells a much story that actively embraces more lighthearted themes than the other DCEU movies. Audiences and critics seemed to appreciate that tonal shift in a way that most people likely couldn't have anticipated, and the success of Wonder Woman has already started to bleed into the development of other DC properties -- particularly Joss Whedon's extensive (and exorbitantly expensive) Justice League reshoots.
With that in mind, it is no surprise to learn that DC wants to double down on the success of this film. Wonder Woman 2 is already on the way with a confirmed December 13, 2019 release date, and Warner Bros. has wisely opted to bring Patty Jenkins back to direct Gal Gadot in the follow-up -- in a deal that will make her the most highly paid female director of all time. It makes sense; after all, if it is not broken, don't bother fixing it. Now it's just a question of whether or not we will get an Etta Candy solo movie; I would watch the hell out of that.
Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman will be available on Digital HD on August 29, and the Blu-ray will hit shelves three weeks later on September 19. Diana Prince will make her next appearance in the DCEU when Justice League premieres in theaters on November 17.
