Another day, another Netflix movie is being announced with a release date just a few days away, and this time it’s the science-fiction thriller The Titan.

The film is scheduled to drop on the streaming platform at the end of March, so if this first look gets anyone intrigued to see Avatar’s Sam Worthington turn into the Creature From the Black Lagoon (look at the poster on IMDB), then they won’t have to wait too long to see how that situation plays out.

In addition to Worthington as Air Force pilot Rick Janssen, the film boasts a recognizable cast with Orange Is the New Black’s Taylor Schilling, and Tom Wilkinson in the lead roles, as Rick’s wife Abigail and the man behind the Titan project, Professor Martin Collingwood, respectively. The supporting cast isn’t too bad either with Agyness Deyn (Hard Sun) and Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones) set to appear as a scientist and soldier in the near future, working to augment humans so that they can help colonize Saturn’s moon of Titan.

The official synopsis for The Titan reads like several familiar sci-fi scenarios mashed into one film, with the Earth dying and humanity’s survival at stake, a new program seeks to help soldiers “evolve” and survive in deep space. Of course, the scientific breakthrough has some unintended consequences for the participants. Check out the official synopsis below:

“In the near future, a military family is chosen to participate in a ground-breaking experiment to accelerate man’s genetic evolution in order to relocate humanity to another planet.”

There are hints of everything from Interstellar to Species to Splice in The Titan, so you have to give it credit for checking off as many “influenced by” boxes as it does. It’s difficult to tell from the trailer where the film is going in terms of tone, in particular whether or not it’s aiming to be a science-fiction thriller with a twinge of tragedy or if it’s planning to escalate Janssen’s transformation into full-on horror.

The Titan has been in the works for quite some time now; we previously caught word of it back in 2015, when The Affair’s Ruth Wilson was reportedly on board to star opposite Worthington. Presumably Wilson was cast in the role now played by Schilling, but that’s not the only casting change since the film was announced, as Sofia Boutella (The Mummy) was reportedly attached as well. We’ll have to wait and see if Wilson and Boutella moved on from a stinker or if they’ll be ruing the day they left The Titan.
