Despite the long wait for the film, producer Jerry Bruckheimer assures a Nicolas Cage-led National Treasure 3 is still in development. Bruckheimer is considered to be one of the most celebrated producers in the film industry, helping launch everything from the Top Gun to Bad Boys to Pirates of the Caribbean franchises. Bruckheimer produced the first two installments in the National Treasure franchise alongside director Jon Turteltaub.

Cage led the cast of the National Treasure movies as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a descendant of a family of treasure hunters who explores the country in the search for valuable items connected to various US historical figures. Alongside Cage, the main cast for the first two National Treasure movies included Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Jon Voight and Harvey Keitel, with Sean Bean acting as the villain of the first film and Ed Harris as the antagonist of the sequel. Though receiving mixed reviews from critics for their outlandish plots, the National Treasure films have both been box office hits and are considered audience favorites and those eager for the franchise's return have exciting news coming their way.

During a recent AMA on Top Gun's Reddit account, one fan asked producer Jerry Bruckheimer whether he plans to work with Nicolas Cage any time soon. Not only did Bruckheimer express his love for the Oscar winner, but shared an exciting development update on a long-gestating sequel with Cage. See what Bruckheimer said below:

"Absolutely. I love Nicolas, he's a brilliant actor and we are currently working on a script for National Treasure."

Bruckheimer's update that National Treasure 3 is still in the works comes over two years after it was announced Chris Bremner had been tapped to pen the script, though Cage has indicated recently he has neither read the script for it nor been contacted by Disney. Cage believed Disney had put the project on hold while they focused on the National Treasure TV series, which will act as a continuation of the movie franchise and see the return of Justin Bartha's Riley. The Disney+ show will primarily center on a new, young group of characters with a cast led by Lisette Alexis, Lyndon Smith, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

While Bruckheimer's update may not give a timeline of when the film may come to be, the confirmation that National Treasure 3 with Cage is still in the works is sure to come as exciting news for fans of the franchise. It also comes at a time in which Cage is enjoying a career resurgence in the independent scene, namely with the acclaimed drama Pig and well-received meta action-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. While audiences await further word on the potential National Treasure 3, they can revisit the first two films streaming on Disney+ now.
