After bringing their comedic sensibility to Saturday Night Live’s digital shorts and scoring jobs co-starring in or writing/directing movies with other people, the Lonely Island team (who last made Hot Rod) are about to unleash the full force of their madness on the big screen once again. Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone are cooking up a new movie for Universal.

The project doesn’t have a title yet, but the three will co-write and star in a story set in the music world (which makes sense given their side rap personalities and love of creating silly songs) that Taccone and Schaffer, who have both directed other movies, will tackle together.

Judd Apatow has stepped up to produce, and little else is known about what we can expect. Given that this is the trio that came up with such instant classics and this and this, expect madness. They’ve had less success cinematically, especially where box office figures are concerned, but since their first stab at movie comedy brought us the aforementioned Hot Rod, we’re willing to give them an awful lot of leeway with a purely Island-focused film.
