While many other sci-fi classics like Total Recall and RoboCop continue to regularly be rebooted for new audiences, there’s one other project set in the future that still hasn’t managed to see the light of day. Warner Bros. has been trying unsuccessfully to remake the 1976 movie Logan’s Run (based on the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan) for the past 15 years.

It all started back in 2000, when Skip Woods (Sabotage) entered negotiations to write and direct a new adaptation that would be closer to the book than the original movie. But Woods was never officially hired, and Bryan Singer (X-Men) was then brought in to helm another version for the studio. Screenwriter Dan Harris even turned in a first draft, though Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) later rewrote that script.

But the list of those involved in Logan’s Run doesn’t end there, with Carl Erik Rinsch (47 Ronin) and Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) attached to direct and Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Will Beall (Castle), Andrew Baldwin and Ken Levine (BioShock) all writing the script at one point or another.

Now Warner Bros. hopes that someone firmly established in the genre can at last give their remake a push in the right direction. THR reports that writer-producer Simon Kinberg has been hired to write a story and treatment for the project, with another writer penning the script at a later point. He’ll also join Joel Silver as a producer.

Kinberg is best known for being behind a number of Fox’s biggest properties. He’s been a writer and/or producer on the last four X-Men movies, Fantastic Four and Deadpool. Not to mention his work on Star Wars: Rebels and one of the Star Wars anthology films, along with a lot of other popular, well-known movies. Kinberg has amassed a lot of experience and street cred in the sci-fi genre over the years, and he could now be the perfect person to finally bring Logan’s Run to the big screen.

At the very least, Kinberg is well known for fixing up scripts and preparing them for filming. With him prepping the story from the scratch, a new Logan’s Run film will surely get off to a good start. However, it’s unknown right now if Warner Bros. is still planning to go ahead with a female lead at the center of the story.
