Keanu Reeves may have played a bad guy in his directorial debut, the actioner “Man of Tai Chi”, but he’s firmly back in the hero saddle for the Japan-set fantasy actioner “47 Ronin”. Check out a new trailer for the film, hailing from the UK, where the film is scheduled to open on Boxing Day. I’m not sure what that is, exactly, but perhaps you UK types will know.

The film is the feature-length debut of former commercials director Carl Erik Rinsch, or as the studio press packages refers to him, “visionary director Carl Erik Rinsch”. You’d think they would wait until he has more than one (unreleased) film on his resume before adding the “visionary” tag, but you would be wrong. Film looks plenty snazzy, I suppose.

Keanu Reeves makes an explosive return to action-adventure in 47 Ronin. After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves)—a half-breed they once rejected—as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors. As this exiled, enslaved outcast becomes their most deadly weapon, he will transform into the hero who inspires this band of outnumbered rebels to seize eternity.

Starring Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Rinko Kikuchi, and Ko Shibasaki.

He’s not afraid this December 25, 2013.
