Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has pushed Sony Pictures past the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office in 2017. Just as the year draws to a close, the company is getting a nice boost from the update to 1995’s Jumanji. The modernized sequel is well on its way to commercial success and won over many critics with its fun blend of action and humor, led by megastar Dwayne Johnson.


Of course, Spider-Man: Homecoming is Sony’s true 2017 cash cow with over $334 million in North America. Sony’s first entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe leads the way. But Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has secured a solid standing in second place and continues to grow in its second weekend in theaters. As a result, Sony can finally say it passed the $1 billion mark overall.


As reported by Deadline on Friday, Welcome to the Jungle is projected to earn a three-day total of $46 million. That will bring its domestic total to $179.2 million, which officially pushes Sony over $1 billion for the year. Furthermore, it’s the first time the company hit the mark since 2014 ($1.2 billion). The Amazing Spider-Man 2, action-comedy 22 Jump Street, and Denzel Washington vehicle The Equalizer led the releases that year. For Sony, it’s an increase of nearly 10 percent over its 2016 total of $901.8 million (according to Box Office Mojo).


Due to staying respectable at the box office behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Welcome to the Jungle is predicted to pass the $200 million mark at the domestic box office by its third weekend. It’s also already earned $49.5 million internationally through one weekend with more releases yet to come in other markets. The movie should eventually approach $300 million worldwide, which would make it a surefire success off its $90 million budget.


With Welcome to the Jungle’s strong early run, Johnson has only proven himself more bankable and Sony has been all-but assured that another Jumanji sequel will be made. Perhaps Johnson, Jack Black and the rest of the main cast will get their wishes as to what actors they’d like to see and what kind of stories they’d want to see explored. Regardless of where the revived Jumanji franchise goes from here, it’s certainly helped Sony reach a major milestone.


Despite the big number in 2017, it’s unclear whether Sony can reach that success again in 2018. The hope for them is that the 3D animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has a similar impact at the box office as its live-action counterparts – not to mention their first live-action Spider-Man spinoff, Venom, starring Tom Hardy. There’s also a slew of sequels like The Equalizer 2, Hotel Transylvania 3, and Goosebumps 2 that should bring some success. But it remains to be seen if they can match what Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle helped accomplish.
