As far as A-list movie stars are concerned, there aren’t many names bigger than Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. In fact, the two happen to be the favorite actors of the movie-going public these days, as they had the most commercially successful years out anyone with a film role in 2014. Between the success of The Hunger Games, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The LEGO Movie, audiences couldn’t get enough of the duo.

It would be easy to see why a studio would be interested in getting the two to star opposite one another in the same film. If Sony has its way, they’ll be the first to pull off the task, matching the actors with some impressive talent behind the camera as well.

The Wrap is reporting that Pratt and Lawrence are in early talks to star in Passengers, a sci-fi romance story from director Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game). Set in the distant future, the story follows a man (the role Pratt is being considered for) who awakens from a cryogenic slumber on a traveling spaceship 90 years prior to his fellow passengers, and decides to wake a female passenger (Lawrence) to avoid succumbing to loneliness.

Before fans get too excited about romance blossoming between the ultra-loveable Pratt and Lawrence on screen, it’s crucial for readers to keep in mind that this is far from a done deal. Passengers is hardly the only project the two actors are looking to add to their planners; Lawrence has to make Joy with David O. Russell for a December 2015 release, before hopping on to X-Men: Apocalypse, shooting in the spring. Pratt, of course, seems to be scooping up one major gig after another, so there’s a chance scheduling issues prevent this pairing from happening.

That said, since the two are at least entering talks, there’s reason to think the timing may work. Both Pratt and Lawrence have displayed range throughout their careers, with the former carving out a reputation as a strong character actor before his big break, and the latter being nominated for three Academy Awards (winning one). Tackling an intimate drama like Passengers could be refreshing for both actors, not to mention a welcome change for audiences.

Outside of the potential Pratt/Lawrence dynamic, Passengers was already intriguing thanks to the involvement of Tyldum, who earned a Best Director nomination for his work on The Imitation Game. Though some felt that the WWII flick struggled to feel “cinematic” in one sense, it was one of the best reviewed films of the year, with its performances and fascinating narrative receiving much praise (read our review).

The space setting is a far cry from the second World War, but if the focus is on the relationship between the characters (and not genre set pieces), Tyldum should have a fine handle on the material.

Since Passengers is still early in development, it’s hard to say when Sony is hoping to release it in theaters. If Pratt and Lawrence do sign on, then it’s feasible that the project could be put on the fast track, which would tentatively put it on track for a 2016 debut. We’ll have to wait and see if the actors’ prior commitments pose any troubles, but right now this movie is certainly one to keep an eye out for.

We’ll keep you updated on Passengers as more information becomes available.
