Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day 2 is scheduled to open in theaters twenty years after its predecessor became a box office/pop cultural hit. back in 1996. Just for that reason alone, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that the majority of the sequel’s cast (or close enough to the majority) will be newcomers to the world of Independence Day.

Case in point: so far, Jeff Goldblum is the only actor confirmed to be reprising his role from Emmerich’s previous alien invasion tentpole. Goldblum will share the screen in the new Independence Day installment alongside the youngsters Liam Hemsworth (the Hunger Games franchise) and Jessie Usher (Survivor’s Remorse), in addition to an unexpected costar - award-winning Anglo-French thespian Charlotte Gainsbourg – according to the latest reports.

THR is reporting that Gainsbourg is in talks to join the Independence Day 2 cast, ahead of filming starting within the next few months. This would be Gainsbourg’s first time in the pool of big-budget Hollywood tentpole fare. She’s previously tended to stick with high-art fare, including multiple collaborations with filmmaker Lars von Trier (on such controversial films as Antichrist and Nymphomaniac), as well as movies that were directed by Michel Gondry (The Science of Sleep) and newbie Oscar-winner Alejandro González Iñárritu (21 Grams).

There’s no word yet on what role Gainsbourg is up to play in the Independence Day sequel. However, given the wide range of professionals that feature as characters in all of Emmerich’s films (ID4, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, and so forth), Gainsbourg could wind up portraying anyone from a foreign representative – who must work with U.S. politicians when more alien invaders show up at Earth’s door – to a scientist who discovers what the remainder of the extraterrestrial fleet has been doing the last twenty years: traveling to our world via wormhole (or so Emmerich has indicated in the past).

James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright – who’re also penning the script for Emmerich’s Stargate movie reboot – wrote the most recent script draft for Independence Day 2, according to THR‘s update on the project. We’ve also heard that Carter Blanchard (another relative unknown) worked on the screenplay, refining the earliest drafts put together by Emmerich, his longtime collaborator Dean Devlin, and James Vanderbilt (White House Down).

It’s certainly a very different climate than when Independence Day came out in the mid-1990s; not just in terms of the social/political atmosphere (ID4 definitely reflected the spirit of its time), but the movie landscape too. Thus, it’s hard to say for certain if Independence Day 2 will prove to be anywhere near as successful as its predecessor, in the age of the superhero blockbuster; but, then again, perhaps Emmerich’s film will have an easier time standing out from the rest of the crowd, for that same reason.

Independence Day 2 opens in U.S. theaters on June 24th, 2016.
