HELIX: "PILOT" REVIEW"run like hell."
http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/12/12/helix-trailer-2
Advance review: A group of scientists are stuck in the Arctic as some unknown entity attacks them one by one, leading to massive mistrust. It's not a new story if you've seen The Andromeda Strain, The Thing, The Stand or Alien or indeed if you've ever watched The X-Files or Star Trek or any number of other sci-fi series. But the reason why the "trapped with a monster that's turning people into monsters" trope has become a trope is because its so damned compelling when its done well. And Helix does it well.
Executive Produced by Ronald D. Moore, the man behind Battlestar Galactica, and created by Cameron Porsandeh, Helix takes a group of CDC scientists to an Arctic research facility to investigate the outbreak of...something...that has killed two people and infected another man (played with gusto by Neil Napier), who happens to be the estranged brother of the CDC team's leader, Alan Farragut, played by Billy Campbell (The Rocketeer, The 4400). Campbell makes the trip with two brilliant doctors - one of them is his ex-wife (Kyra Zagorsky) and the other a new potential love interest (Jordan Hayes). A rather wacky veterinary pathologist (Catherine Lemeiux) and a U.S. Army major (Mark Ghanime) with a secret agenda round out the team. Again, none of this reinvents the wheel, but it's a likable cast that manages the script's soapy and/or familiar beats with aplomb, for the most part.
After a chilling opening (featuring Dionne Warwick's chipper hit "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" playing in stark contrast to the carnage that befalls the Arctic station), we meet Farragut, an upstanding and committed pathologist who sends a new group of CDC scientists into the world to face "horrors others can't imagine." He soon confronts horror even he couldn't foresee when he examines the gory remains of the dead and sees what's become of his brother. Campbell does some truly fantastic work here as his character tries to maintain his professionalism while battling a complex array of personal issues.
There were several moments in the Pilot that made me jump out of my seat and a couple of truly gross-out scenes. While not a horror series per se, this show ain't for the overly squeamish. I really liked that Helix doesn't rely on its soundtrack to amp up the tension, instead relying on the innate terror of the situations the characters are in. I also really enjoy the look of the show, which has a real 1970s sci-fi feel to it.
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.
The pilot does suffer from a bout of Pilot-itis, dumping a lot of expository dialogue on us in not always subtle ways, but that's fairly unavoidable in the first episode of a series like this. Less understandable is why French Canadian Catherine Lemieux was asked to play an American southerner when her ability to do the accent is so lacking. Just make her French for crying out loud.
The show also makes no secret of who the villains are, with research station head Dr. Hatake (The Wolverine's Hiroyuki Sanada) and the Army guy plotting and making shifty-eyed dodges at various points. We know who is up to something but we're not entirely sure of the what. Because there are so many familiar elements to the story, I have to believe we're in for some big surprises, or else what's the point?
While it's too early to tell if Helix will be able to sustain the suspense and intrigue of its first hour over time, this is a strong pilot that should please both genre fans and fans of good drama alike.
