HBO drama In Treatment may be making a reappearance on the network. The series, centered around psychotherapist, Dr. Paul Weston (Gabriel Bryne), ended in December 2010 after three years on HBO. The series first launched in 2008 and was modeled after the Israel series, BeTipful. The show focused on Weston’s weekly interactions with his patients and his own therapist (Dianne Weist). Every week the show aired multiple episodes where Weston met with his patients before a final episode where Weston met with his therapist. Each season a new set of patients were brought in effectively creating a new cast.

TVLine announced HBO is looking into re-booting In Treatment in an exclusive story. It has not yet been revealed whether Bryne will return to the series as Weston. Because the original In Treatment primarily composed of two characters talking while maintaining social distance, the series would not be heavily impacted by new Hollywood COVID-19 restrictions.

Episodes could potentially be shot remotely via Zoom to mimic telehealth styles used for remote therapy. Ten years after the show’s end, an In Treatment reboot could be an exclusive for the HBO Max streaming platform. The reboot would be one addition to the already extensive film and television line-up.

The social isolation required to abate the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors has led to increased stress and mental disorders. The psychotherapy series may contribute to further normalizing mental health treatment. Not to mention, viewers may be primed to watch an experience specific to the pandemic play out on screens. Since many will be unable to return to a pre-pandemic normal until a vaccine is available, a potential In Treatment reboot has plenty of time to become the next television sensation.
