I am very glad to see
El Topo (1970)!
Not a typical western with good whites, bad indians etc, but a superb movie, as all Jodorowsky did.
Another one non typical, is
McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), Altman's excellent film.
As well as
The Wild Bunch (1969), Peckinpah's masterpiece,
The more I am thinking though, the more movies I remember
And if
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973) was on the list, I would have been in a dilemma, because it is one of my favorites, with great actors and incredible Dylan's music...
Also, Monte Hellman's
The Shooting (1966) and
Ride in the Whirlwind (1966), fantastic not mainstream films.
And Fonda's junior
The Hired Hand (1971) an less known and underrated movie.
There are many more movies that I could vote for, even more classic ones and not so "artistic" as the above, like "The Searchers (1956)" and "Stagecoach (1939)", both Ford's best, "My Darling Clementine (1946)" another Ford's beauty, Anthony Mann's "Winchester '73 (1950)", Hawks' "Red River (1948)", George Stevens' "Shane (1953)", Cimino's opus "Heaven's Gate (1980)" which unfortunately was a commercial failure and discouraged this gifted director of doing more unconventional movies, but finally "
El Topo (1970)" deserves my vote
In fact, I will "vote" this way:
1. El Topo (1970)
2.
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973)
3. The Shooting (1966)
4. The Hired Hand (1971)
5. McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971)
And we have not included spaghetti-westerns!
So, here I do with them:
1. La resa dei conti (1966)
2. Une corde, un Colt... (1969)
3. Il grande silenzio (1968)
4. Da uomo a uomo (1966)
5. Vaya con dios gringo (1966)
So, that's all from me
