HBO has unveiled the final ‘Beautiful Death’ poster for Game of Thrones season 7, highlighting the downfall of one of the show’s main characters. While most season finales for Game of Thrones lead to plenty of questions from fans, the final episode of season 7 didn’t really upend things as we’ve come to expect. Most of the big moments had been telegraphed all season, but the execution was certainly entertaining to watch.

From the Night King bringing down the Wall on the back of a zombie dragon to Jon and Dany consummating their relationship (while the audience had their familial relationship confirmed), season 8 will have plenty of repercussions to deal with. One of the most shocking moments from the season 7 finale, however, was the three living Starks conspiring against the great manipulator, Petyr Baelish. After seven seasons and most of his life scheming to sit upon the Iron Throne, Littlefinger was brought low by his arrogance and his blindspot for Sansa. Now, his final moment has been eulogized in exquisite detail.

HBO has released the final ‘Beautiful Death’ poster by Robert Ball for Game of Thrones season 7. As Littlefinger was the only major death in the finale, it makes sense the poster focuses on him. The character was also a fan-favorite and Ball himself was even sad to see him go, so he made his latest poster a symbolism-packed tribute to the rogue:


I’ve drawn Petyr a mockingbird, his sigil, with his throat cut by the Catspaw blade. The shadow of his wings form three wolves: the Stark children. [The wolf representing] Bran has white eyes, to show his power to warg. Above the mockingbird, the floor forms his web of lies, and below there is a crescent moon — a grisly version of the House Arryn sigil.
Ball certainly had plenty of symbolism to choose from. Even the choice of weapon that ended Littlefinger’s life has a sort of poetry to it, while some of the lives he ruined helped to bring him down. We can even see the character’s beloved ladder of chaos, this time wrought in blood. And though Ball says Bran’s wolf has white eyes, they seem to have a distinctly blue hue.

It turns out the season 7 finale included a deleted scene with Bran and Sansa, where the latter spoke with her brother about some of his visions, before making her move against Littlefinger. Given the combined skills and knowledge of the Stark children, it was only a matter of time before Petyr was brought down. Still, the scene served as a fitting send-off to a character many fans have loved to hate and hated that they loved.
