Right now the landscape of superhero movies seems to be in state of flux right now. There have been a slew of Marvel rumors pointing to Captain America and Iron Man facing off in Captain America 3; Avengers 3 changing the roster; and possibly big crossover event films like Infinity Gauntlet becoming part of the game plan. On the DC/Warner Bros. side, we’ve been hearing everything from character team-up films (Batman V Superman, Flash/Green Lantern) to full team up films (Justice League) to traditional solo character stories (Batman Reboot, Man of Steel 2, Aquaman).

Well, now DC has set their own gauntlet down, revealing now less than 9 new films coming – with many big announcements coinciding along them. Just as The CW has successfully brought back The Flash with a new TV series, we learn that the character will get a new movie counterpart – and it won’t be TV series star Grant Gustin. Perk of Being a Wallflower Ezra Miller is playing The Flash in the DC Movie Universe.

Warner Bros. made the announcement today during the Time Warner Investor Day. Miller first got acclaim playing a very disturbed youth in the Golden Globe-nominated film, We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011). He followed that with more mainstream indie cred playing a spirited gay youth in The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) – and tried period piece literature with the 2014 Madame Bovary adaptation. Needless to say, playing The Flash will expose Miller to a newer – and much bigger – audience.

Thus continues DC/WB’s ‘out of left field’ casting trend. Ben Affleck as Batman; Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman; Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor; Jason Mamoa now confirmed as Aquaman – with the exception of Ray Fisher as Cyborg and Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam, it’s safe to say that these DC movie casting choices are ones that likely didn’t make it unto anyone’s fantasy casting list.

On the other hand, so far – from what images we’ve seen of Batman V Superman - it looks like the casting actually makes sense, aesthetically, when the principal stars are in costume. Gal Gadot may have her acting called into question (as likely will Mamoa), but Affleck, Eisenberg, Fisher and Miller – these are actors of proven caliber who may surprise in the end, even though they baffled many at the start.

The Flash movie won’t arrive until 2018 – which is plenty of time for Grant Gustin and the TV series to have its run and firmly establish itself, before Miller comes along and delivers his take. (And there’s still that TV Justice League they can build.) It’s also unclear which version of The Flash this will be – another Barry Allen? Wally West? Those seem like the two most obvious choices, but as always with DC/WB, you never know.
