Evil Dead’s Fede Alvarez is Going to Hell — or at Least, Into Dante’s Inferno

Coming off the blood-splattering goodness of the “Evil Dead” remake, Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez is now looking to not just talk about sending your souls to the pits of Hell, he’s actually going there by helming a live-action big-screen version of the videogame “Dante’s Inferno” for Universal.

Based on the Electronic Arts game of the same name, “Dante’s Inferno” will follow a knight name Dante Aligheri, “who with the help of the poet Virgil ventures into the nine rings of hell to rescue his beloved Beatrice. In the process, he becomes an unwitting pawn in an ancient war between heaven and hell.”

    Oh, that old thing.

The game was previously adapted into an animated movie called “Dante’s Inferno: An Animated Epic” in 2010, that our very own Dedpool reviewed here. You can check it out if you’re so inclined. Or not. Really, it’s entirely up to you.

Bruce McKenna wrote the most recent draft of the script.

Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing for Universal, along with EA Entertainment’s Patrick O’Brien.

Alvarez’s “Evil Dead” reboot was a big hit, earning $97 million worldwide from a meager $17 million budget, thanks to a cast of relative unknowns and a singular location — a cabin in the ewoods. A sequel is of course not far behind.
