The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is still alive, and a reboot starring Margot Robbie is now in development – here’s what we know about it. Disney takes inspiration from pretty much everywhere – from classic fairy tales to legends, real-life people and events, and even theme park attractions, as is the case of Pirates of the Caribbean. This series of movies is based on Walt Disney’s theme park attraction of the same name and introduced the audience to one of Johnny Depp’s most iconic roles: Captain Jack Sparrow.

The first movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, saw Jack Sparrow joining forces with Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) to save Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) from cursed pirates led by Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) on board of the Black Pearl. The movie was a big box office hit and was generally well-received by critics, making way for a film franchise with a total of five movies, the last one being Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, released in 2017. However, the quality of the stories has decreased, and while there’s a sixth movie planned, Disney is already working on a reboot that will change Jack Sparrow for a female lead.

The still-untitled Pirates of the Caribbean reboot will be completely separate from the Jack Sparrow timeline and has Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson on board as well as Margot Robbie, set to be the star of the movie. Disney, then, is now working on two different Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and here’s everything you need to know about Margot Robbie’s version.

Of the two Pirates of the Caribbean movies currently in development, none of them will be a direct continuation of the previous five movies, and one of these may or may not include Jack Sparrow in some capacity. Margot Robbie’s version, on the other hand, will be fully separate from the main franchise and its characters, so Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, and more are not expected to appear.

The Pirates of the Caribbean reboot is still in its early stages of pre-production, with only Hodson attached as writer and no director onboard yet, which along with the coronavirus pandemic, which has delayed a number of movie and TV projects, has left the movie without a projected release date. If everything goes well and the world can go back to normal soon, Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean could release in late 2021/early 2022.

As mentioned above, the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot is still in its early stages of pre-production, with only Margot Robbie attached to star in it. However, with Christina Hodson as a writer, whose credits include Bumblebee, Birds of Prey, and the upcoming DCEU movie The Flash, fans of the franchise can expect a lot of female characters in the story, bringing a much-needed contrast and balance to the franchise, which has mostly seen male characters in lead roles.

Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean will be an original take on the franchise, finally leaving Jack Sparrow behind and everything that came with him. Details on the plot are currently unknown, but Margot Robbie has teased there will be “a lot of girl power” and that she’s excited “at the prospect of kind of adding a very key female element to that world”. As mentioned above, characters from the previous five Pirates of the Caribbean movies won’t appear in this reboot, so it’s definitely going to be a breath of fresh air that the franchise desperately needed.
