Production on Disney’s live-action Aladdin is officially done with filming wrapped. The Mouse House is running through their extensive library of animated classics and retelling them in a new way. While they’ve already tackled a number of beloved films, next year should be their biggest yet. Jon Favreau’s The Lion King is highly anticipated, but it will actually be Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin that hits theaters first. The film was subject to a prolonged casting process to find the perfect people to lead, and eventually brought Mena Massoud and Power Rangers‘ Naomi Scott onboard.


The biggest name in the cast is Will Smith, who has the difficult task of following up Robin Williams’ voice of Genie. The cast filled out nicely around the three stars, but production hasn’t been without controversy. Shortcuts in casting led to them “browning up” background actors, a move that immediately stirred up debate. But, that did not stop production from continuing on, and they’ve now wrapped.


Aladdin‘s two young stars both confirmed on social media that they are done filming the live-action remake. Massoud shared a photo of him with a giant clapperboard and plenty of green screen behind him. Scott meanwhile shared her final day with two tweets, thanking the crew for a great shoot before closing out her time on set.

With both young leads now done filming, they should get a decently long break before worrying about any reshoots or press tours. Massoud undoubtedly has more pressure on him to deliver and he’s largely unknown to most. Scott on the other hand just had her big break in Power Rangers. Regardless of their past experiences, hopefully both were comfortable in their roles. Aladdin may be quite the tale of adventure, but it also relies on viewers rooting for the street rat and princess to get together.

Production coming to a close also means that we are getting closer to the start of marketing. Disney has yet to reveal any official look at Aladdin, not even a cast photo. Fans of the animated tale are understandably eager to see what the live-action take will look like. Not only will the look of Agrabah be paramount in establishing the film’s general aesthetic, but it will go a long way in depicting the looks of the characters. But, beyond simple promotional stills, the true test will come when a trailer is released. That should come by the end of the year, but hopefully Disney doesn’t make everyone wait that long.
