The Conjuring 3, which is expected to begin production this summer, has received a fall 2020 release date. The series focuses on the cases of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Audiences were first introduced to the Warrens' terrifying cases with 2013's The Conjuring, which was regarded as the scariest movie of the year upon its release. The film would spawn several spinoffs such as Annabelle, The Nun, and more recently, The Curse of La Llorona.

James Wan directed the first two entries, but Michael Chaves will be helming the upcoming third installment. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will both be returning to reprise their respective roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren. A specific synopsis has not yet been released but The Conjuring 3 will focus on a murder trial where demonic possession was used as a legal defense. It seems the trial of Arne Cheyenne Jonshon (aka the "Devil Made Me Do it" case) will be the trial the film centers on. While the release is over a year away, fans who can't wait to revisit the Warrens can see the paranormal investigators take on the demon-possessed doll Annabelle this summer when Annabelle Comes Home arrives in theaters. It's been known for a while that the third outing in The Conjuring series would release sometime next year, but now a specific date has been revealed.

During a CinemaCon presentation today, Warner Bros. revealed that The Conjuring 3 would be arriving in theaters on September 11, 2020. The film will be arriving four years after the release of The Conjuring 2, making the longest gap in between entries. With filming set to begin this summer in Atlanta, the film should wrap production just in time to begin promoting for its fall release. And, while Wan won't be directing he will still be involved as a producer for the film.

The Conjuring series has been a massive hit with horror fans since its inception in 2013; a lot of that can be credited to Wan's conveyance of tone and genuine terror. With Wan stepping down as director, it is not yet known if this will greatly impact the third entry. Whether or not Chaves can fill the void left by Wan will be up for fans to decide, but he is helming The Curse of La Llorona, so moviegoers will get to see what he has to offer. Not much is known regarding the cast of the movie, but updates should become more frequent as production nears. In the past, both entries have taken place in the 1970s, but The Conjuring 3 is expected to take the Warrens into the 1980s.

The Conjuring universe continues to grow each year, and it mostly consists of spinoffs at the moment, but next year the Warrens will return with another horrifying case. With supernatural films becoming more frequent in the horror genre, the Conjuring films have certainly been two of the best received in recent memory. Audiences will soon get to reunite with the Warrens when The Conjuring 3 arrives in theaters next September.
