After Iron Man 3, Robert Downey Jr.’s contract was complete with Marvel but the studio knew as well as fans did that the story of Tony Stark was far from over. Iron Man is a centerpiece of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and if The Avengers had yet to face their greatest threat, there’s no way RDJ could truly step away from it all. He said it himself: he likes to feel needed.

It didn’t take long before Robert Downey Jr. signed for another two films with Marvel Studios, and at the time they were referred to only as The Avengers 2 and 3. Since then we’ve learned that The Avengers 3 is actually just the beginning of two-part story titled Infinity War that spans two years in 2018-19. When Marvel made that announcement, unveiling their entire slate of Phase 3 movies, they also finally confirmed the title of Captain America 3. Just as we had heard, Robert Downey Jr. would be signing for another movie in the MCU and that movie would be Captain America: Civil War.

This summer, The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man conclude Phase 2, paving the way for Phase 3 to begin with Civil War next summer. Even with Marvel’s two 2015 movies fast approaching, there’s a lot of attention understandably focused on Cap 3 which begins shooting this April. It’s already being built up as the biggest Avengers-style movie to date from the studio and it’s expected that most heroes that have been introduced so far (potentially even some characters from Marvel TV) will have an appearance.

Knowing that, YouTuber Alex Luthor crafted a wonderful Captain America: Civil War trailer that combines an epic score with a montage of voice clips and footage from Marvel’s movies to date. It’s an exciting look at what’s coming in May 2016 when Marvel heroes turn on Marvel heroes. The Avengers set this in motion and what’s on the way from Joss Whedon’s sequel where the villainous Ultron (and others) are introduced will pave the path for the Marvel universe looking at heroes differently.

“It’s gonna be huge.” - Robert Downey Jr. on Civil War

The idea of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers battling against each other, with heroes aligning themselves on either side, was too exciting an idea for Robert Downey Jr. to pass up and because of that, Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige was able to convince him to sign up.

“Captain America 3 is so far beyond Avengers 2.5 and onto the realm of Avengers 3.8″ – Anthony Mackie on Civil War

Civil War is much more than just a battle of ideals between government agencies and high profile heroes though. There will be more traditional Marvel Comics villains as well, including the return of Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s Frank Grillo who will suit up as Crossbones, the likely introduction of Baron Zemo (played by Daniel Bruhl) and others. Cap’s best pal turned assassin, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) returns as well.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron releases in theaters on May 1 2015, followed by Ant-Man on July 17 2015, Captain America: Civil War on May 6 2016, Doctor Strange on November 4 2016, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on May 5 2017, Thor: Ragnarok on July 28, 2017, Black Panther on November 3 2017, Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 on May 4 2018, Captain Marvel on July 6 2018, Inhumans on November 2 2018 and Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 on May 3 2019.
