We've hit the point in awards season where the American TV academy hands out its trophies. The 2017 Emmys, hosted by comedian and Late Night presenter Stephen Colbert happened this weekend and it was a good night for the likes of Big Little Lies, Atlanta, This Is Us and Black Mirror.

There were some pleasant surprises among the winners, with Donald Glover taking home both Directing and Acting awards for Atlanta and Aziz Ansari and Waithe landing a writing award for Master Of None's Thanksgiving episode. Waithe was a particular milestone, the first African American to win the trophy.

Black Mirror took two gongs, with Charlie Brooker scoring writing in the Limited Series/Movie category and the actual TV Movie award itself for San Junipero.

Big Little Lies stormed the stage, nabbing Limited Series, and awards for Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgard, Laura Dern and Directing for Limited Series Or Movie went to the show's Jean-Marc Vallée. Also scoring plenty of glory? The Handmaid's Tale, which won the Drama series award, Drama Directing for Reed Morano, Drama Writing for showrunner Bruce Miller, and acting trophies for Ann Dowd and Elisabeth Moss.
