Did Warner Bros. just blinked? Or cry uncle? Or did they do the smart thing and avoid having to fight for fanboys at the box office in another year?

We’ll find out in 2016, because the studio has announced that Zack Snyder’s “Batman vs. Superman” will be moving from its July 17, 2015 release date to May 6, 2016…away from having to face the likes of Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode 7″ in what was shaping up to be an uber geek movie year.

Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman offered up this reason for the movie:

We are happy to take advantage of these coveted summer dates, which are perfect for two of our biggest tentpole releases. We share the fans’ excitement to see DC Comics’ most popular figures, Superman and Batman, together on the big screen for the first time, which will now be arriving in theatres in May 2016. Peter Pan has delighted people of every generation for more than a century, so we are thrilled to bring him back to the screen next summer for today’s moviegoers.

He is referring to Joe Wright’s “Peter Pan” movie, which will now take over “Batman vs. Superman’s” slot for the studio.

The new May 2016 date for “Batman vs. Superman” would pit it against Marvel’s unknown movie — the studio announced a 2016 picture a while back, but not the title. So 2016 could very well pit Batman and Superman against anyone, including Black Panther, Doctor Strange, or someone else that hasn’t gotten any attention of late. Or perhaps another “Thor” or “Iron Man” sequel. Without knowing what Marvel will be putting up in 2016, it looks like clear sailings for “Batman vs. Superman” to dominate the box office in 2016.

“Batman vs. Superman” will star Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. The film is expected to launch Warner Bros.’ attempt at a cohesive D.C. Cinematic Movie Universe, and followed up with a “Justice League” movie.
