The full Batman v Superman trailer premiered at Comic-Con just a couple weeks ago, introducing us to the epic scope and scale of Zack Snyder’s follow-up to Man of Steel. As the new trailer revealed, the BvS is going to have just as much of Batman as Superman, which could mean a deep dive into reestablishing the Dark Knight’s mythos for yet another reboot.

Ben Affleck will be making his debut as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman v Superman, along with Jeremy Irons as the new Alfred. But that is only the beginning of the introduction of the new world of Batman, as Jared Leto will be playing the Joker in DC’s other movie next year, Suicide Squad. With Batman and the Joker already having a storied past together, it is very possible that a number of key events could have already occurred between the two by the time Batman v Superman takes place, as the trailer hinted at.

The Comic-Con trailer for Batman v Superman gave us our first look at the new Robin costume, or rather a display of it. There was text painted on the suit too, which read “Hahaha, joke’s on you, Batman.” This of course hints at a huge potential storyline already having happened in the DC Extended Universe – the death of Robin. Now, according to the latest rumors, we may know who is playing Robin in the flashback scenes in Batman v Superman.

Heroic Hollywood claims that Zack Snyder’s son, Eli Snyder, is playing Robin in a scene that was filmed with Jared Leto’s Joker. It is also implied that Eli’s iteration of Batman’s sidekick will in fact be deceased by the time the events of Batman v Superman happen, meaning the flashback could be a take on the Death in the Family storyline from the Batman comics.

For the uninitiated, A Death in the Family was an arc in the late ’80s, which sees the second Robin, Jason Todd, being brutally tortured and ultimately murdered by the Joker. The story had a huge effect on the future of Batman, who blamed himself for the loss, as it set up several further storylines, including Under the Red Hood, in which Jason Todd returns and becomes the brutal vigilante Red Hood.

Of course, if Jason Todd is ever to return (and if that Robin even is Jason Todd, which isn’t automatically the case), it’s likely that Eli Snyder won’t be back to play the character. Despite his previous acting roles, including appearances in 300 and Watchmen, the young Snyder is already fairly busy, as he is set to attend UCLA in the fall and study film while there. Plus, if the rumor is to be believed and Zack Snyder really did use his son for the scene, Eli was likely just a stand-in, allowing DC and Warner Bros. the proper time to officially cast the character, permitting that they do in fact have plans to use Robin again in the future. Given the secrecy being kept on Batman v Superman currently, this rumor should definitely be taken with a grain of salt.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be in theaters on March 25th, 2016; Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman – June 23rd, 2017; Justice League – November 17th, 2017; The Flash – March 23rd, 2018; Aquaman – July 27th, 2018; Shazam – April 5th, 2019; Justice League 2 – June 14th, 2019; Cyborg – April 3rd, 2020; Green Lantern – June 19th, 2020.
