The newly released Avengers: Infinity War trailer finally confirms that Loki did steal the Tesseract containing the Space Stone in Thor: Ragnarok. Over the years, Odin’s adopted son has proven time and time and again that he has no boundaries whatsoever when it comes to furthering his personal agendas. We have seen him wreak havoc in the first Avengers, bringing an army of Chitauri in an effort to take over the world.

He faked his death in Thor: The Dark World, then banished his father from Asgard to play pretend as the ruler of the planet, resulting in Hela’s catastrophic re-emergence, and we’re pretty sure that if we ask his brother, he has a dozen more stories proving the point that Loki will never be trustworthy. Having said that, we continue to give him the benefit of the doubt that just maybe, this time, he has truly ready to leave his conniving days behind.

With his flip-flopping nature, Loki is more of a wildcard than a straight-up villain. He does have really bad moments that oftentimes lead to dire situations. But given that we have an understanding of his motivation, living his whole life overshadowed by his mighty brother, coupled with the several times he actually did the right thing, we tend to be more lenient with him. However, his latest mischief might finally tip him over to the dark side considering the massive repercussions that his actions could result in.

Following a tease that Loki just might have also grabbed the Tesseract when he journeyed to Odin’s vault to get Surtur’s head in order to fulfill the prophecy of Ragnarok in Thor 3, fans were divided whether the God of Mischief took the powerful artifact or not. Now, we can finally settle the debate, seeing that the Infinity War trailer features Loki in possession of the mystical cube. Worse, his betrayal doesn’t stop there. It also appears like he was offering the Tesseract to someone, perhaps Thanos, giving him the ability to emerge from a wormhole and hunt our heroes. Unless, of course, he is left with no choice but to hand the Tesseract to the purple baddie.

In hindsight, it does make sense that Loki took the Tesseract with him. After all, Asgard is now in ruins and it would just not make sense that the one of the MacGuffins of this 22-movie arc story is buried under the ashes of Thor’s home planet, especially considering we still don’t know the whereabouts of the final and sixth Infinity Stone — the Soul Gem.

Whether Loki once again redeems himself from his latest bad call or not, remains to be seen. Although we know that he has some connections with Thanos all the way back since the first Avengers, it is unclear how their relationship started, if they still are associated with each other. Surely, the mad Titan is not entirely happy with the Asgardian prince after he has failed to carry out his set task. But as previously mentioned, it’s best not to rule out the possibility that despite Loki taking the Tesseract, he might not have any intentions of delivering the cube to the film’s big bad. It’s just that, the circumstance that he found himself in forced him to do so.

Doing an Infinity Stones count based on what we have seen in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer, Thanos has two stones in the Gauntlet — the Space and Power Gem (from Guardians of the Galaxy). We have also seen the Mind Stone forcefully removed from Vision’s forehead, which technically gets the main villain three out of the six stones he needs to execute his universe altering plans.
